I commented on this topic at another site. I think all of this begs the point, Meta, X's or any similar social media platform are not journalistic sites. Vetting of stories gets in the way of what they were designed to do; basically provide a digital arena, a digital corner bar, where people can share rumors and talk smack. Sure one might hear a useful bit of information while sipping a pint but mostly we went of to the bar to share gossip and pig pile on the boss.

The devolution and use of these sites as an end all source of information is well, unfortunate.

Like the Rule of Law and Human Rights, who sets the law, whose rights are more important, and whose speech will be free while others are not? You suck Zuck

As long as there remains an "Israel Policy Chief" at Meta with the power to suppress pro-Palestinian voices and amplify Israeli propaganda, Meta will always be a complete and utter fucking joke when it comes to 'free speech.'

This is just Fuckerberg getting on his knees for Trump.

exactly. Zuckerberg BS is ridiculously transparent.

"Is he for real though?" Brings to mind the leopard and spots saying. It has been around for a very long time for good reason.

Mark Zuckerberg has never been a decent human being. Walk away from Facebook, if this concerns you. Otherwise, you are a hypocrite, in the extreme.

This would be a perfect time for anybody who decided to create a Instagram/Facebook/ TikTok competitor. Meta is circling the drain and TikTok is getting banned and people just want to be able to talk and share videos with their friends. Is that too much to ask?

The problem is that the creator will be sorely tempted to cash in the obscene amounts of money thrown at them to sell these new competitors to... Meta.

You are right. I specifically don't like that the State Department under different administration can determine which groups constitute a threat. That will change constantly. Is there no way we can all just agree that almost no one should be censored? I mean, child trafficking is already illegal and so is incitement to imminent violence. If it doesn't break the law (minus the stupid Patriot Act) it should be allowed.

I'm mixed on this. On the one hand, Community Notes has been surprisingly effective on Twitter. On the other hand, having neutral fact-checkers can make it harder for people who get caught spreading lies to argue if they get caught. Great reporting, as usual! I didn't know most of this. Thanks, Ken!

Show me a neutral fact checker.

Nick Clegg must have broken Usain Bolt's 100m record getting out of there ahead of this!! 😂

Thank you for illuminating what exactly the "changes" entail. I'm not big on social media and really didn't care to learn what Meta was up to with this "big" announcement. I'm always a skeptic and your insight surely shows why.

"Many continue to evince the same deference to government wishes that Zuckerberg claims to be fighting against, like Meta’s ongoing blanket ban on “information obtained from hacked sources” regardless of whether it’s newsworthy."

Are they making any kind of hair splitting distinction between "hacked" and "leaked" documents the way that some in the MSM did?

Anyone who thinks Zuckerberg is doing anything other than aligning his censorship policies with the desires of the Trump administration is a very optimistic individual.

So... he's just copying Musk with lame assertions of "free speech?" Neat! Let me break my neck to join up!

But has/will he, really? From what I understand the only change is to get rid of "fact checking" (ostensibly behind the scenes AI assisted) and rely instead on a "community notes" feature like Twitter/X.

Facebook/Meta has built a labyrinthine, multi-layered algorithmic censorship process which I believe relies to some not-small degree on services like "NewsGuard" and others that are even less transparent or well known.

I was put in Facebook "timeout" multiple times over the last period of a few weeks I used their platform for private instant messaging. They are monitoring even the instant messenger app for terms like "nazi" and "zionist" or "hamas" and immediately censoring/deplatforming people (if in many cases just temporarily). When that actually changes, I'll believe something meaningful has happened, but I have given up on Meta and will likely not be testing it myself.

I recommend Yasha Levine's "Surveillance Valley" for an eye opening expose, probably even to people like me who thought they understood the level of social media integration with the surveillance/security state. http://surveillancevalley.com/

First Cuckerberg should be investigated for his role in stealing 2020 election and disclose fully his cooperation with FBI, Pentagon ( and Mossad in Israel), and various CIA cutouts
