" What is America’s politics lacking that makes people feel it is not worth engaging?" Could that missing element be actual, true democracy, one that offers voters a real choice? Just a thought.

According to AI:

"Several health systems, including Lehigh Valley Health Network, Carson Tahoe Health, and Mayo Clinic, are ending or have ended contracts with UnitedHealthcare. Other systems like Johns Hopkins Medicine and Samaritan Health Services have also gone out of network with UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Advantage plans. This is part of a larger trend where many health systems are ending contracts with various health insurers over payment disputes. "

"dark powers of an assassin"?! I'm getting the vibe that someone at NYT secretly wanted to get their version of a batman origin story out of their system

Thanks for writing the stuff that the mainstream media refuses to. Zohran is what NYC needs, badly. Long overdue.

And the health insurance mafia in USA is horrific. Hopefully someday USA won't be the only wealthy country in the world to not have universal healthcare.

The time for huge changes has come. Because the 1% at the top aren't working for the PEOPLE in the slightest.

I don't believe in some of the things Mamdani stands for, but at least he stands for something that he feels strongly about. More importantly what the people of New York need.

Re Mangione, good take on media response and his manifesto.

Let’s not neglect how dumb an assassin he was, though, caught by McDonalds?

Yeah. Both before and after. Why bother going through the rigor morale of building a 3D printed (untraceable) gun or trying to disguise himself (sometimes) when he was so sloppy about everything else.

Greed.

In Thorsten Veblen's classic, written at the turn of the 20th century, "The Theory of the Leisure Class" he wrote of how the upper class sets the standard for all. To the extent that income allows, and now, with rampant lending, may not allow, everyone wants to live as large as possible. Bezos' has a $500 million yacht and a guy I know who works at a coffee shop has a brand new Mustang with the biggest engine.

Have a house? Think of getting a bigger one. In college and in debt? Friends are, not gathering locally but are going to Europe to celebrate a birthday, why don't you go too? Everyone is always talking about the countries they have visited, what are you waiting for?

Joe Average wins the lottery. What does he do? Go wild spending the money.

Yes, the 1% are greedy and their greed is fed by effectively farming the American people for whatever product the company of this or that CEO makes. That's capitalism, the economic system that is eating up the planet but with no alternative on offer and everyone trying hard to land a job to get an income that will only be temporarily adequate, if that.

How about ICE? You are a young man with a tiny income? Here is an offer that pays very well, is good for at least the rest of Trump's term and all that is required is you be willing to rough up your fellow Americans while anonymous behind sunglasses and a mask. Racing around in big vehicles disregarding traffic laws and being able to wear a combat outfit is frosting on the cake. You may already dislike illegal immigrants, so why not get paid well and go after them with patriotic fervor? The Constitution? Just give me my next paycheck.

I think it is imperative that the 1% be heavily taxed because money is power and the wealthy have tremendous power over others that is unjust. Larry Ellison buys Paramount without hesitation for the power it will give him. It has no effect whatsoever on his lifestyle. But Larry and his fellow billionaires are not uniquely greedy. Most people would behave the same way with the same wealth.

America is devoted to profit, not people. We are living the result and have the president we deserve for the system we live under. He's an empty shell, but he's rich.

Mangione went after a fat cat in a country where all want more financial fat. I will have to read his manifesto, but my sense is that he paid no heed to the dense forest around him (all of us) as he targeted a tree that was unusually tall.

The New York Times endorsing Cuomo after the "allegations of sexual harassment from 11 women" is just utterly foul. If they don't like Mamdani, why not refuse to endorse?

If you’re a national security reporter why don’t you spend more time looking into how the NYPD found him?

They didn't. Some random McDonald's employee did. But what does any of that have to do with national security?

Do you really think that McDonald’s story is true? Look at this NY Mag article where Jessica Tisch talks about how the NYPD intelligence division got involved with the search: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/nypd-commissioner-jessica-tisch-eric-adams.html

There are only 5 mentions of Luigi's name in that article and one is a caption to a photo. It's also a really long article. What exactly should I be looking for? That they used the camera system? We know that there is a lot of CCTV in cities like London and NYC. TMK they never actually tied a name to the suspect until he was caught on the basis of the photos. So seriously what am I missing here? (P.S. I also got the paywall and had to figure out a way around it)

There’s an entire subsection on the case. If you can’t find it I can’t help you lol.

The government also did stuff like tell the public that the suspect had left NYC (so the Christmas tree lighting proceeded), visit the hostel Luigi stayed at later on the day of the crime, and go to his mom’s house the night before he was arrested fwiw
