"That threat is you."

The paranoid style of American politics is a long-standing tradition.

As in the Red Scares of the past, and earlier witch hunts.

It was inevitable that the apparatus built up for a global war on terror would be turned on natives and citizens, legal or not, given the cupidity and stupidity of its proponents.

This assessment assumes that the American people have finally come to realize it's time to throw off their shackles. Is anyone else seeing any sign of this?

We can safely assume that “class-based or economic grievances” means that strikes or even protests in support of delivery workers in NYC, eg. are acts of domestic terrorism according to the US gov. It targets low income groups across the political spectrum.

Why would they worry about economic grievances strikes me hardest.

Cécile Stelzer-Johnson's avatar

Perhaps because deep down they KNOW, that THEY are causing the economic grievances?

This Trump regime is clearly widening the net, so to speak, so as to criminalize any dissent. Disobey or speak out against Dear Leader and you are a threat to national security.

The Trump administration seems to be using the same language, with the same sense of urgency, as the Biden administration (see, for example, https://bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/National-Strategy-for-Countering-Domestic-Terrorism.pdf), while changing the targets. It seems to be part of Trump’s “I will be your retribution” strategy.

"a resurgence in English-language terrorist media" . . . I'm having a little trouble trying to define that. Perhaps someone could assist me here.

This is completely Trumped up in keeping with his tirades against "radical leftists" while all the violence we see is coming from ICE.

Tyrants must have a bogeyman to target. For Hitler it was Communists and Jews. His mania caught fire to the extent that he could offer a referendum to the public that would allow him unlimited power and they gave it to him.

The problem for Trump is that he is asserting unlimited power without public approval because he knows that the public would repudiate what he is doing if he dared to offer us a say. Far from building approval he is destroying it daily. Hitler was a genius at crowd control varying in size up to the population of Germany. Trump is a buffoon who cannot control his daily impulses, offering more absurd ideas, each one topping the one before.

Trump knows that he will have to suspend Congress if he loses his Republican yes men at the midterms, a certainty if our democratic process is allowed to play out. This means he must come up with a way to stop the midterms thus hyping the nonsense you are revealing in today's post to build a case that there is national anarchy. There wasn't a hint of anarchy before he took office so job 1 for him is to make it real and he is doing so with a will.

Most distressing is the ease with which he has funded and raised his brownshirts - ICE - a corps not qualified for law enforcement but perfectly at ease with brutality against fellow Americans.

What stands between we the people and the President of Punishment? Nothing but Congress taking a stand for the Constitution. With the current members this is not likely. With newly elected members there is a chance it might, if they get into office.

Most remarkable to me is that this madman was elected. He did it with a host of voters blinded with anger eager to upset the applecart. Their wish has been granted in a way they did not expect but should have considering his life history of self-obsession. The DP helped greatly by proposing Biden again and then popping in Harris.

Do we deserve what has happened? We do in that we were complacent as the corruption of our political system proceeded before our eyes and the Supreme Court was packed and nothing was done about it. We turned away and now are paying the price.

“class-based or economic grievances.”

Nice catch, Ken.

This kind of lengthy document makes my eyes glaze over, but the "class based" expression got my eyes to open wide.

(Ha, the clash of Classes, a famous Marxist view is surfacing even in their jargon).

So there ARE "classes", and not everyone is INCLUDED". Good to know! The riff-raff has to be kept out of the gilded ballroom, and the exclusive golf clubs, good to know...

("Economic grievances" also tells me that they know that their economy is swirling pitifully in the toilet.)

But back to "INCLUSION". Maybe DEI is better than Xenophobia, Misogyny and Racism.

If "liberals" are known for DEI, This Administration is known for

XENOPHOBIA, MISOGYNY and RACISM.

I have not heard much of a full throated defense on the left for DEI.

I wonder why that is...

Diversity, Equality and Inclusion are POSITIVE values worth upholding, IMHO.

Hey Ken!

This is absolutely prescient reporting. What most of the American people acknowledge is that the President doesn't have the power to declare war, but he can DimDon it up enuf to cause NATO to declare war w/ Murca's l33t-est morans.

Then we will be in a situation where he can declare martial law / blah and we will really be in a pickle. I truly wonder why more American's (note the different spelling from "Murca's MAGA Morans" are not buying guns right now. Benevolence only gets you so far when the rule of law and social norms are out the window. With Republicans asleep at the wheel, intentionally, the only options we have are to do what they will not: defend our neighbors constitutional rights.

Also, this feels like it's really clutch – just fuck up the billionaires and the USA elite will crumple:

Anyway, I love your reporting; you're the best!

It is pretty obvious with all the censorship bills (Australia, Canada), the harassment of people at home by police visits (USA: recent case in Florida of a woman criticizing the mayor of Miami), and all the arrests for speech (Germany, the UK) that citizens are far more of a threat to the state than ISIS.

The biggest threat to the state has always been regular folks rather than foreign terrorists and hardened criminals.

M F's avatar

Just because the state rarely represents us regular folks.

Joan-Marie Lartin's avatar

For me, and I believe many others, the main threat to our national security and well being is the government. They are terrorists.
