This is very aggressive and very fast. They are working to make any form of protest into a federal crime, and to reorient all national and local "law enforcement" around crushing it. The cash reward system and calls for citizens to inform on their neighbors should be terrifying to anyone with the slightest grasp of history.

I still believe their real targets are not so much the street protestors (which they believe they can mop up over time through extreme violence) but scaring away any foundations or rich people from backing any organization even remotely critical of the administration (hence the repeated references to tax law).

Is it (just) irrational behavior or has it been planned by the Project 2025 nuts who were waiting for the right opportunity? I'm guessing it's both.

"Bondi directs the FBI to enhance ... its tipline in order to more aggressively solicit tips from the American public on, well, other Americans. To that end, Bondi also directs the FBI to establish “a cash reward system” for information leading to identification and arrest of leadership figures within these purported domestic terrorist organizations."

Given the broad ideological criteria for a "domestic terrorist" (or "Enemy of the State"), and the consolidation of various government and private databases that undoubtedly took place under DOGE (which I think was actually its primary purpose), this all sounds much like the STASI in former East Germany. But the technology is much better now.

I wonder how long it will be before you come under suspicion simply for having purchased or watched various movies that are classified as "subversive". If that isn't already happening...

And I think I will push out even further my likelihood of ever travelling to the USA again.

You are hitting on an incredibly important point. Counting on a large mass of citizens to report on the others has always been a weakness of authoritarianism. But I think they truly believe they can use electronic surveillance and AI to have a relatively few people monitor everyone at all time, and fundamentally change this dynamic. They may be right.

In passing, this is also the dream of the ultrawealthy. In the past, the ultra wealthy were always still dependent on servants, and so had to maintain some connection to humanity. Now. They plausibly hope that AI and robots can provide everything, and they can fully divorce themselves from the human species. They may be right. And that is the real singularity, not artificial intelligence.

Well great . . . I guess we common folk . . . that is citizens, have a choice of functioning either as terrorists or bounty hunters. What a wonderful life. When is the next protest march? I'm ready.

I'll save the feds some time.

I strongly oppose the trump administration and their actions, which are largely lawless and devoid of reason beyond nationalistic fears stoked by racism and greed.

Our government did this under Joseph McCarthy with Roy Cohn’s help in the 1950’s. And, as someone mentioned above, with CIA and FBI throughout the 1960’s. We incarcerated the Japanese at Manzinar and other camps in WWII. We have targeted the public again and again and still people have the courage to protest, resist and risk everything for the truth. Somehow we will live through this madness and find a way to make this nation live by the Constitution. It may take decades, but we will not tolerate this insanity.
