Thanks Ken for the in depth reporting. I'm ok with giving this guy his hearing and deporting him. He made a bad choice. This one or two arrests do not justify the disappearance of countless family members without criminal records that were swept up by ICE raids in recent months. The Admin is throwing the baby out with the bathwater because of Xenophobia. We need rule of law.

In re to being "ok with giving this guy his hearing and deporting him," I'd like to share this quote from Silky Shah in conversation with Kelly Hayes. The entire discussion can be found here: https://organizingmythoughts.org/the-authoritarian-machine-is-growing-and-it-wont-stop-at-immigrants/?ref=organizingmythoughts-newsletter

"I think the thing that abolition and a deeper understanding of the prison-industrial complex teaches us is that when you accept that some people are deserving of incarceration or detention or deportation, the scope of who is eligible, the scope of who is deserving just keeps expanding."

"“I think that there's major questions right now about who is financially backing these protests,”Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said today. “There's some activity on the ground that it seems that is highly coordinated, and that there might be a financial backer that could be even a foreign adversary. We are having … the IRS and the FBI, look further into who might be backing these protests.”"

In the internet age all it takes to be "highly coordinated" is a social media or other online presence.

No foreign financial backers are required.

Paid protestors that are violent have been evident in the past. Minneapolis,Portland, etc.

But those folks were there to incite violence. Accusing the peaceful opposition of there own “Rovian”tactic is characteristic of the regime.

Can you publish a map of Los Angeles showing the blocks with the protests relative to the City/County at large. It could provide context.

Any sources on this violent paid protesters claim?

The idea that you need to pay someone to protest violently is laughable to me - as a Philadelphian for 20+ years, I can assure you that even well-adjusted people enjoy a good riot as long as they feel that they're on the same side as the rioters.

People are being randomly picked up by ICE everywhere- gardeners, students at a bus stop across from Chick-Fil-A in Pasadena. That these young men are fighting on behalf of those who have worked ceaselessly without any real benefits for decades is more likely than not.

These immigrants do all the hard labor in Los Angeles, they work grueling hours under grueling conditions. The heat, the disgusting over-priced housing. Keep in mind that in the Pico-Rivera, the densest neighborhood in the county if not the country, the rate of covid deaths were higher than any place else. Kitchens were the most dangerous place to work during covid.

Yet these essential workers did not qualify for benefits and still had to work, as their family members and friends dropped like flies. Imagine who they lost, and imagine how worn out they must be. The height of the pandemic ended but three years ago.

Learning that these young men work in kitchens explains a great deal.

There are always bad actors who burn, loot and vandalize during what would be a legitimate and powerful protest. All this administration needs is one person to fit their stereotype and they will ride it like a mule. These upcoming No Kings protests could be powerful if they wave American flags and try to keep people from burning and looting.

Can we stop with the American flags rhetoric? This isn't "Fascism 2025 Sponsored by Nike." Let people protest how we want to protest. This is our movement, not some slick advertising campaign.

The whole notion that we should walk around like a bunch of jingoistic pricks to please the jingoistic pricks...haven't we learned our lesson there? We can't market our way out of a dictatorship. We can't flag-wave our way out of tyranny.

Appealing to the MSM, the MAGA cult members or any of these other systems of oppression isn't a thing. They're not for us. They never have been.

The argument for immigrant health care is if they're sick they'll transmit that to everyone else. It's my taxes and morality to give them health care whatever.

I remember Mayor Daley claiming "outside agitators" were responsible for the '68 Democratic Convention police riot in Chicago, though the crowd was made up of Americans from near and far who had every right to be on the scene and upset at the Vietnam War.

Government (or any power) always needs to put the blame on a group it doesn't like to make it appear that a demonstration is not spontaneous and made up of people (in this case Americans) that have a legitimate grievance. The great fear of power is that it will be delegitimized, so an enemy must be identified. In the case of Israel, it is the demand that everyone acknowledge its "right to exist" (the Palestinians the enemy) when the fact is that what makes countries, but most particularly Israel, is simply might making right.

Trump is the President of Punishment who is in a rage to get this or that group or individual. In the Bible one finds "Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord" meaning that vengeance is not for we mortals to undertake. Trump is not only undertaking it but relishing in his power to do it. I think he would easily miss the meaning of the Bible quote and put himself in the role of "the Lord."

Judges are already accusing the administration of not acting in good faith. If they go at Newsom, it’s likely to get thrown out of court. What then? I suppose Trump could send Newsom to CECOT, but all holy hell would break loose if that happens.

If they're getting paid or part of a coordinated funded protest, do you expect that to be listed in their LinkedIn profile? Do you expect that to be a full-time job? That these fellows had a job doesn't mean they weren't paid, or part of protest coordinated by NGOs. Note, I didn't say whether these two people were paid to protest - just thew a logical BS flag that holding a job somehows disproves the accusations.

LA doesn't list the immigration status and that's straight forward. The Justice department does and that's "gleefully" reporting? Ken, more reporting less opinionating please. If we're having an exercise in adjective use, one could as easily say "The Justice Department laid bare the attempt of LA County to hide the immigration status of these two suspects". Both your wording and mine would be opinion and not reporting.
