Peace does not come out the barrel of a gun. Ever.

Just about everything in my house is made in China. The US relies on weapons sales to keep the balance of trade with the rest of the world from going even further negative than it is. Pentagon spending is deliberately spread widely across the states. In my town we have a company building generators for the military. The capture by the MIC is complete and of course Israel comes in as well, spending the almost $4 billion we give it every year to buy weaponry from the US, a welfare program that has been going on for decades now.

Speaking of Israel, I just read an article in Haaretz that Harris' husband is trumpeting antisemitism being a major problem in the US since Oct 7, saying nothing about what Israel has been doing since Oct 7 with the full support of the US. His claim is a red herring to distract from the ongoing slaughter in Gaza with no end in sight.

I think Harris is going to defeat Trump without a problem, but neither one of them gets my vote. Harris will not be addressing big private money in election campaigns, indicted by her "most lethal" comment, and until that it is eliminated we will continue to be a democracy of lobbies with the MIC and Israel leading the way.

BTW - some have said that if only we could get women in charge things would change. Don't believe it.

Agree on women being war mongers, too. And we all know, the rise in anti-semetism is due to counting anyone who criticizes the genocide as an anti-semite.

A few things: 1) when members of lower status groups get into leadership positions, they aren’t able to effect much change until their numbers reach critical mass (shown by research). We haven’t even HAD a female president yet and we’re nowhere near critical mass in the other branches of government, but already you’ve decided that nothing will change? Seems premature.

2) Antisemitism is a big problem in the US, as is evidenced by the rising number of threats and incidents against Jewish Americans and their organizations since 10/7. Doug Emhoff talking about it isn’t a “red herring”, even if you think he should make statements about the plight of the Palestinians instead.

3) you think Harris will prevail but you’re unwilling to vote to make it happen because … Harris won’t be getting big money out of elections? And she made a comment that our military should be the most lethal?

I’m always shocked by the complacency of purists. If enough people take your view, we will have another Trump (or Vance) term. You must not be too worried about that big money in campaigns, or about Palestine or democracy for that matter. The far right apparatus that is propping up Trump is just waiting to get their hands on the levers and complete their half century plan to enact Project 2025. But that’s not reason enough to vote for you? How do you sleep at night? The scale of suffering in Palestine will be dwarfed by what the Heritage Foundation and Leonard Leo will unleash on us. JFC.

Dana:

1) The US is not threatened by any country, yet we overproduce military hardware for profit. This is because of the power of the MIC lobby to keep Congress upping the military ("defense") budget every year, almost in unanimity, now close to $1 trillion dollars. This hardware is useless to the American people. All of the important people in the DP have supported this profligate spending - the Clintons, Obama, Jeffries, Pelosi. I stand by my statement - nothing will change, until Citizens United is made moot by legislation and none of the Dems just named have said anything about it, nor has Trump. I recommend a book written in 1985 that still is on point: "The Permanent War Economy" by Seymour Melman.

2) Antisemitism is not a big problem in the US. I live with Jews as neighbors, synagogues are all around. Family members are Jews, though I am not. As I think I have mentioned in a previous comment, my governor, my mayor, my state rep, my federal rep, even my dentist are Jews. Extremely wealthy Jews who are Zionists are the ones pushing the antisemitism theme, people such as Bill Ackman and Ben Shapiro, even though their life histories show that the US is the safe haven for Jews.

I follow the local news and there have been no reports of harassment, let alone physical threats to Jews and any such incident would get big coverage immediately. This in a location where ultra-orthodox Jews openly walk on the sidewalks every Saturday, a display that would certainly attract at least verbal abuse from antisemites. I am a member of Jewish Voice for Peace and have been for 25 years, no members are addressing antisemitism in the US because they all know it is a red herring as I described it. What they DO talk about and demonstrate about is the horror that Israel is conducting made possible only because of US support.

As for Emhoff, he should be talking about the real issue for American Jews, the ongoing unlimited carnage in Gaza and the outrage of the country proclaiming liberty and justice for all doing all it can to support ethnic cleansing. Israel has always wanted the world to see it as a safe haven for victims even as it victimizes the Palestinians. It is to be expected that this claim about antisemitism in the US would be promoted by supporters of Israel as it has the same goal: we are and always will be victims, pay attention to that claim and not to the fact that a country exclusively for Jews with an army of Jews is laying waste Gaza while Jewish settlers are running wild in the West Bank.

JVP, overwhelmingly made up of young people, puts aside this blindfold, rightly seeing that the US has created a monster by unquestioning and unlimited support for Israel and there can be no excuse for the atrocities going on by a group of human beings against another group, with the aggressors happening to be Jews. Netanyahu said many years ago "the Americans are easily managed" and he was right. All Americans need to work to break the "special relationship" that allows members of the Knesset to approve of slaughter and call for more knowing there will be no consequences from Washington.

3) Your ignorance causes you to jump to a conclusion in your third paragraph. I never said I was not voting, only that I will not vote for either Harris or Trump. I will vote for Jill Stein, another Jew who is not dignifying the antisemitism red herring, but speaking and demonstrating against Zionism which is absolutely distinct from Judaism.

As for the remainder of your comment, as I said, I am not voting for Trump. Stein will likely be unable to get a substantial number of votes, but it will not be for the lack of mine. This is to say, a vote for Stein is not a vote for any other candidate.

The fact that the ADL has JVP listed as an antisemitic hate group says a lot about what zionists consider antisemitism.

For sheer lunacy, one need only listen to the head of the ADL, Jonathan Greenblatt, who is trumpeting antisemitism in America at every opportunity and who is welcomed by mainstream media. For a good read about his predecessor at the ADL, Abe Foxman, read Norman Finkelstein's book, "The Holocaust Industry". Finkelstein has yet to be invited to a program on mainstream media, not surprisingly as he is a walking encyclopedia on Israel/Palestine and defeats the efforts of Zionists simply by sticking with the facts, not only regarding the current scene but back through history.

Yes, when I raise this point with people who then proceed to tell me why JVP IS antisemitic then I know that there's no point in attempting any good faith dialogue with the person I'm talking to. It's distressing to realize how much Kool aid has been ingested and how much of it was passed out by legacy media.

I have no preference, actually. I'm not a purist, either. I'm a Jew. I am very concerned about anti-semitism. I am irked that the common definition is crcriticizing Israel. People who call themselves Zionists are not necessarily Jewish. Zionism is not for all Jews. Anti-semites are the usual subjects--white nationalists. Tucker Carson had a well known Holocaust apologist on his show who claimed the Jews star starved because German army bureauctacy was overwhelmed by the project. Find the pod Due Dissidence. The hosts disprove the apologist. Most recent episode talks about the real anti-semetc threat and how the AIPAC zealots are putting Jews in a much more perilous postion.

"As commander-in-chief, I will ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world..."

Which wouldn't be "necessary" if all those other governments would stop building their countries so close to US military bases.

O/T but brings to mind a truism.

Q: Why will there never be a coup in the USA?

A: Because there's no American Embassy in Washington D.C.

Remember when liberals thought GWB was the Antichrist?

I miss when the Democrats were not 14 miles to the right of GWB.

In 72 to keep McGovern, a forever bomber pilot and a strong critic of the Vietnam war from winning, Democrat Gov. John Connolly, who was shot with Kennedy in ‘63, formed Democrats for Nixon, and promised 20M crossover votes. McGovern also called Nixon the most corrupt president in history as reports circulated of corporate lobbyists going into his reelection committee office, called CREEP, with satchels full of cash.

Lethal is why nations have armed people on the payroll. I don't see China doing any gentle disarming in the South China Sea. Sweden didn't join NATO because things were too quiet in their neighborhood.

Bragging about having the “most lethal military in the world” is silly. Nobody is missing the fact that America has gone 1-3-1 in major military conflicts since World War II. American politicians need to put more energy into developing an effective military, which -- in my opinion -- would require our government to think long and hard before unleashing lethal force on our opponents and exposing our servicepeople (and non-combatants) to harm.
