My brother in law got esophageal cancer and was dead within six months. I am sorry for this congressman but he should have the grace to step down and enjoy whatever time he has left. Sadly it seems like the only way to get these decrepit old farts out of power is for them to die.
How did she “sell out”? I haven’t seen evidence of that. She has matured as a legislator and I am very disappointed that she wasn’t voted to the position, but what are you talking about?
Man...did she really vote for that garbage proposal to adopt the Holocaust Society/Industry definition of anti-Semitism? That *is* very telling and disappointing if so.
These old politicians just won't give it up, even when they are near death. We'll have a whole caravan of wheelchairs coming into the Capitol for the next State of the Union.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In the fallout of Senator Mitch McConnell's fall and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's hospitalization in Luxembourg, the United States Congress passed a bipartisan bill requiring LifeAlert buttons to be installed at every congressional seat.
According to representatives who proposed the bill, the new measure is a "helpful precaution" for the sake of the 80% of Congress who are nearing the age of 100.
"It's been a long time coming," said Representative Marco Rubio. "We've been neglecting the elderly in this country for far too long — no more so than here in Congress. But this new measure ought to add some level of security for those of our members who suffer some form of a medical emergency on a near-daily basis. It was either this or we move all legislative sessions to the Shady Acres Nursing Home just outside of town."
The appointment of Rep. Connelly, a seriously debilitated member of congress, to oversee investigations into public corruption, reflects the importance congress places on such the a task.
Thank you Megan. You would think our Representatives would would have the compassion not to burden a sick man with the seemingly important mission of investigating and exposing public corruption and recommending how to prevent it.
This is absurd however why weren't others vying for the job? A 74 and a 35 year old. As much as I think AOC is likely qualified I don't understand where the 50 something leadership - as someone in my 50s I feel I am at an optimal mix of knowledge experience and youth. This job is so important I don't understand why there aren't a mix of options vying to make an impact.
I think a lot of us (in my early 50s and feel much wiser than I was when younger too) have given up. We have no real voice as citizens and the only allowed options for us if we are to be successful in politicking or assuming elected office is to follow the money and not offend "the Jews" in any way. Having said that, I fully understand that the notion of "anti-Semitism" is just a convenient "argument/thought stopper" and not a genuine concern about another impending Holocaust or Kristallnacht.
1. Nancy Pelosi will never endorse another female that may outshine her (in her mind)
2. Some of the Democratic Party is more worried about offending the wrong people than they are about governing effectively. They probably quilted these people into voting for him because he's dying. No joke. (I only offer these opinions because my Dad is a wealthy ex-Dem whose whole family lives around Baltimore and DC) My mom is from the South and not wealthy. I've spent time and can fit in at both places.
This is very disappointing, and I’m not happy at all with the capitulation of House Dems to the old guard, but I think it’s ghoulish and inaccurate to headline with “dying” in the title. Honestly, the guy is old but that’s just unfair. I know plenty of people who beat terminal cancer diagnoses, even at advanced age, so I take issue with the assumption that he won’t be able to do the job. Doctors and surgeons are among the most arrogant professionals on earth (and in my experience, are frequently proven wrong), so I take those predictions with a giant grain of salt. With that said, she was my choice and I called my rep to vote for her. The Dem party may have to split up if they don’t start changing their ways. We don’t have the time or inclination to keep up the “business as usual” BS. If Rep. Connelly goes downhill, let’s hope they have the smarts to replace him with AOC. She is a bright light.
Some truth here. Wikipedia gives it a 15% 5-year survival rate, with most dying in the first year. So he could survive, although the odds are not good.
I don't think this should be about AOC. She is just another in a line of younger lawmakers on both sides who have fallen victim to the gerontocracy desperately holding on to power at the expense of the party and the people.
I'm confused as to why Rep. Connelly was even vying for this position. He's undergoing cancer treatment, surely he has better things to be focused on? I would hope that any person at any age who has cancer would be focused more on their health, whatever recovery or respite they can get, or spending time with loved ones than an additional responsibility at their job, particularly when there are others who could carry it out. This is so...bizarre.
It would be great to know who we can reach out to - Perhaps we can request AOC be backup. I think the only way to move through this partisan political theatre is to approach the problem with a solution.

Sorry about your brother, Mike.
You're assuming that they'll remove him from office once he's dead.
They cling to power like leeches. Retirement is not a concept.
So sorry for your loss
AOC did all that sucking up to Nancy and Joe, selling herself out, just to be beat by a walking corpse.
Love that for her

Loudly and proudly backing the genocider doer with jello brain even after his jello brain was exposed
Backing the ADL bullshit definition of zionism
Her proud defense of Isreal and Iron dome funding
Be for real Dana
Man...did she really vote for that garbage proposal to adopt the Holocaust Society/Industry definition of anti-Semitism? That *is* very telling and disappointing if so.
that was my first thought too! She fucked over Rashida Tlaib during fucking genocide for less than nothing? I hope she feels good about it.
That shit eating grin photo with Biden should be on any article mentioning AOC and her "extreme leftist agenda".
She will be indistinguishable from Nancy policy wise by next election
And eventually her bank account and investment portfolio will likely equal Nancy's ill-gotten/insider trading levels. We are doomed.
The Old Guard. US cannot move on. Lost in the past.
Why would this idiot even take the position...........did he not have enough healthcare coverage?

They voted for him for 2 reasons.
1. Nancy Pelosi will never endorse another female that may outshine her (in her mind)

Looks like selling her soul has worked out well for AOC

Thank you for staying on top of all these stories Ken. You are doing excellent work.

They were given two bad choices, and Pelosi made sure they chose the worse one. Maybe one of the remaining 209 Democrats could have won?
The bipartisan institutional rot in Washington can’t be fixed by mere generational transition because our problems are deeper than gerontocracy. I wrote a post exploring that theme two years ago. https://open.substack.com/pub/shahidbuttar/p/neither-mcconnell-freezing-nor-biden?r=97w99&utm_medium=ios

Fabulous title and opening line!!! Thanks for the play by play in our national 🎪 circus 🤡
