My life long dream has been to attend a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. I made that happen the year Dolly was inducted. I remember her being very humbled by the whole experience and not really sure why she deserved to be in the Fame. I was thrilled to be there with along with my older brother and sister-in-law who to this day thank me for taking them! Dolly was truly someone everyone should aspire to be. RIP Dolly
It was amazing! We were seated pretty far back, but they had teletrons. In addition to seeing all the inductees, we also saw some pretty famous people doing the induction speeches such as Bruce Springsteen, Janice Jackson, and Robert Downey Jr.
She had a unique knack for uniting people. I'm not even a fan of Country music, but as a human being, she deserves every accolade we can give her. Folks like her are so rare!
Thank you, Ken. I am truly bereft about Dolly's passing. She was an exceptional human being. Gonna watch 9 to 5 this weekend and sing along. And Tim Curry! He mesmerized us all in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. (Gonna have to watch that one, too. With all the required props!) He was an extraordinarily gifted performer. What a week! Kindness matters.
I am not really a big fan of country music, but Dolly Parton far surpassed the genre. I remember her best in the 1980 movie "Nine to Five". I actually saw this in the movie theater 46 years ago. I am 71 now. May this wonderful lady REST IN PEACE. She will be missed.
A wonderful tribute to an incredible person, Ken. One of my favorite Dolly Parton projects is her Imagination Library. Imagine the number of kids she got interested in reading at a very young age, along with their parents.
I contrast her desire to be an anonymous benefactor with another super star whose $50 thousand donation to an “injured mom” was headlined in People Magazine today.
A national treasure was lost this week, and the supply is running dangerously low.
I think of Oprah as another megastar who raked in money but dissimilar to Parton in that Oprah always wanted herself to be front and center, think of the magazine "O" with her on the cover looking at you in every grocery store. She helped people but wanted you to know it. Oprah was so omni-present that it was a relief when she left the spotlight. I don't think Parton ever forgot that she was human.
Keep trying, Ken, this was a good start! I can think of another, but he has become more political. Hardest part of getting old is losing s9 many good ones. Many of them barely made it to 40, at least we had Dolly this long. Already (trying not to) dreading Willie.
No one as pure as Dolly, but ironically, initials BS. Was known for anonymously donating money from early in career (see British miners on strike), WHY, food bank $$ collection/human rights reps at every show, Vietnam vets, Stand up for Heroes, ACLU tour etc. He never meant to be “political.”
