"National security" as it is used by the government and government mouthpieces, means, in essence, the security of corporate profits. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the security of the country or 99.9999% of the people living in it.

Homeland Security, ICE, the militarization of the police , part of the "War On Terror, " were really created to go after American citizens , not crazed Islamic radicals. BLM, DEI, anti Genocide protesters, queers, trans , liberals, political enemies etc . It should be called the War on regular American citizens .

So we are getting to: "I can deport anyone I don't like." Whew. Where will he send us all? El Salvador? Guantanamo? Back to wherever the largest part of our ancestors came from? This is truly obscene.

Thanks for the (scary) article!

Trump’s longtime mentor and idol was Roy Cohn (until he was dying of AIDS, at which Trump dropped him like a hot potato), and the U.S. has reverted to the McCarthy era. Coincidence, I think not. But I can’t place the entire blame for this travesty on Trump. Look no farther than the Democrats who are in favor of the bill making it a crime to criticize Israel. And I bet my senator, John Fetterman, has been turning cartwheels since learning of Mr Khalil’s arrest.

The fallout of 9/11 continues.

People cannot ignore this outrageous assault on the First Amendment, which effects every individual in this country. This action, and the threats of continual arrests of people who voice their disapproval, has to be challenged and denied in the strongest and clearest manner. I am stunned and saddened there are people in our government who actually willingly perpetrate the arrest of anyone for simply voicing a protest of actions taken by a foreign nation that violates human rights. The flagrant violent dismissal of the rule of law and The Constitution of the United States of America needs arrest and impeachment of those violators immediately.

I am Jewish and consider myself to be a hard-liner against Hamas. But that's irrelevant.

If the green card holder was arrested for speech protected by the First Amendment, then this is an outrageous overreach by the Trump administration with implications that make America an inhospitable place for legal immigrants. It seems as if Trump wants to make America a pariah nation.

"...the law seems pretty clear that a green card holder can only be deported if they violate rules relating to their status, conduct a serious crime, or commit espionage, terrorist, or pose a “threat” to “national security.” That’s a huge and vague category, national security."

I agree but, if the national security laws that apply to citizens are equally elastic, Americans are in for an unprecedented curtailment of speech rights.

For comparison, I've seen healthy and vigorous anti-Israel protests in Israel of all places. Would Trump dare go after Americans while Israel hesitates to go after Israelis?

I suppose I should be surprised they did this on the same day they were boasting they were talking directly to Hamas ...

I heard Khalil's wife in NYC is 8 months pregnant and it's not clear where they took Khalil, possibly Louisiana

Nope. Not with you on this one.

A green card holder can be deported for, among many other things, endorsing terrorist activity or persuading others to endorse a terrorist organization. 8 U.S.C. sec. 1182. Under Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project (2010), even speech-based support for terrorist organizations is not protected under the First Amendment. Khalil is entitled to a removal hearing at which he can try to prove that he is being deported based solely on protected speech.

Aside from the law, Khalil is an genocidal racist a**h*** who doesn't deserve to be in this country.

Ken I’m going to be attacked here, however I can’t fathom that there isn’t a reason or a mistake done here that President Trump may or not be personally aware of. You have to know there are so many down the chain who make arrests and it’s very possible an error was made. You are right about permanent residents being legally here. And if they want they can pursue citizenship. My own husband did after our son was born. He was vetted by the FBI and cleared for citizenship after passing the course. So I have had some experience in the process. You might assume that speaking out gets you automatically on the watch list for arrest but there is no actual proof for that assumption. The President is very much in favor of free speech and speaking one’s mind as you can see. I just believe in being fair and actually finding out why that Professor with permanent green card status was arrested before jumping to pre-conceived ideas. If he was just using his right to free speech without causing harm to others, as free speech was meant, then he should be immediately released and I’m certain any legal aid lawyer or any lawyer pro bono will get him immediately released. If there is a more nefarious reason for his arrest then we should be able to find that out shortly. With all your insider connections you could probably find out right now if you reach out to your contacts. Just let’s not assume things we do not yet and accuse the President of knowing something he may not Or saying he is coming after anyone citizen or not who speaks against him. I’m certain you are smart enough to know better than to say something that is conjecture.

You think Trump is in favor of free speech? Honey, he uses it as a synonym of censorship, i.e., only approved, hegemonic speech is allowed. You should pay more attention to how he and his supporters have cultivated saying one thing while meaning the opposite. Democrats also talk out of both sides of their mouths, but it has been a deliberate strategy for Republicans since at least Gingrich (the stuff of meglomania, I would say).

Please read Trump's comments about this, he made it is very clear why they arrested him and it was because he was vocally pro-Palestinian. Not only is this NOT a crime it is not something someone can be legally arrested for of have their permanent residency revoked.

Trump himself is both racist and anti-Semitic, as are many people he has hired to staff his administration, so the reasons RJK Jr. and Trump himself cite for this action are obviously false.

This is neither conjecture nor opinion, it is observable reality and clearly a pretext that will be used to arrest US citizens for their political or social views.

President Trump is no different than former President Biden in conflating criticism of the apartheid state of Israel (https://thisisapartheid.btselem.org/eng/index.html#19) with criticism of those who are culturally or religiously Jewish; the difference is that Trump is now acting on this dangerous antisemitic notion. It is the conflation of the State of Israel with Judaism that presents the greatest danger to Jews everywhere. I urge you to check out the work of Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro who covers this topic from every conceivable angle on his website “Committing High Reason” (https://www.committinghighreason.com/). Also, for the most thorough explanation as to the unconstitutionality of this action against Khalil Mahmoud, see Glenn Greenwald’s coverage - https://rumble.com/v6qfzhg-system-update-show-421.html?e9s=src_v1_mfp – which was very thorough and addresses all of your points.

According to Zeteo - https://zeteo.com/p/scoop-emails-show-mahmoud-khalil-ask-columbia-protection-ice - two days before his arrest, Mahmoud wrote to Columbia’s interim President, citing “a vicious, coordinated, and dehumanizing doxing campaign” against him which he states “have incited a wave of hate, including calls for my deportation and death threats.” He outlines his fears and asks for the university’s urgent assistance. Although Mahmoud adamantly denies the scurrilous charges leveled against him and has been doing so for months, he would be entitled to due process even if they were true. That the university did nothing to protect him from illegal detention was predictable, but scandalous none-the-less.

"The national security state has been spying on student protesters for months"

I suspect it's been going on longer than months. At the very least it's been since 9/11 and never really stopped. It's also interesting to note that some of the court cases being cited in support of the Trump administration's actions here have some old familiar names like Reno, Holder, etc. representing the government.

And of course, there's still the No Fly List and the Targeted Kill List in operation.
