Honestly, the US military probably does need a million drones if it were to ever fight a peer enemy, though of course those would end up being used on undefended populations and Americans if history is any guide. Also, it's kind of funny that Hegseth promises every squad will fly drones while also focusing the military on push-ups and testosterone. Neither of those really help in drone warfare. I'm loath to say that US plans are at odds with themselves but...
It certainly ties in with AI which is the perfect thing to coordinate huge swarms of drones that no human could manage.
The sword of Damocles that hangs over the US and it a great threat that could explode at any time is the $40 trillion deficit that this drone-love will only increase. When it comes to the military there is never talk of restraint. Show the flag and go on a spending spree. It would be astounding to hear Hegseth talk about cutting back something to provide money for the drone-love, such as getting rid of one of our carrier battle fleets. But compromise, financial or otherwise, is out of the question.
There was a book written years ago called "The Perils of Dominance" that lead the US into adventures that prove costly and pointless
The last point to make is that no weapon system goes for long without a countering weapon. Think of all the "advancements", tanks, machine guns, aircraft, submarines, ICBM's, nuclear bombs. All have their very short day of tilting the playing field and then it tilts back.
All of this testosterone driven teenage boy bravado that can't be paid for when climate change goes not only unaddressed but deliberately made worse, not even mentioned in the news or the State of the Union address. The only area of restraint in this administration is in regulation...of anything.
