As a vet who put in over 33 years in the U.S. military I can't overstate how the overturning of a (very minor) disciplinary action here as well as in the case of no disciplinary measures at all in the Navy Daytona Beach low-level flyover, threatens good order and discipline within the military.
Military leaders will now have to consider the blowback stemming from imposition of even the lowest-level punishment for misdeeds which might end up going viral, should Hegseth get wind of it and subsequently issue a reversal. The danger of unprecedented interference from the Pentagon's highest position over what are normally routine incidents handled at the unit level (i.e. not even close to court martial) is a gross second-guessing of commanders who understand the importance of safety and adherence to established protocols and procedures during training or public events.
Disciplinary measures imposed at unit level, particularly in military aviation (where there are no "minor" mistakes) are vital to the inculcation of sound operational judgement in sometimes overeager junior officers. The punishment handed to the Apache crewmembers for clearly deviating from that standard would not have materially impacted their careers; they made a mistake and their commander took appropriate (and proportional) action to reinforce the importance of standards.
