The big picture here is that the Secret Service was created in the Civil war to counter counterfeiting. It wasn't until McKinley was shot (1901) that they acquired the role of protecting politicians.. Sounds like a typical bureaucracy – just keep adding functions.
I guess it was too much to expect they might do something rational like move financial crime back to the Treasury, or hand their new counter terrorist responsibilities over to the FBI.
We must ensure funding to protect Hunter’s massive hog.

Yeah the inability of the media to focus on the big picture is frustrating. I haven't seen a single article raise the issue of their mission creep
