It sucks democrats canโ€™t move to the left on virtually anything cuz then who would give them $1,000,000,000 to lose an election ๐Ÿ˜”

I don't agree that the fascist end of democracy stuff was just campaign rhetoric. The voters have spoken and biden will peacefully transfer power (something that trump did not do), and whether the the new administration becomes a fascist dictatorship (as trump has said he would be) is really not up to biden/harris. It'll be up to trump for us to find out after the transition. So why would you say that a peaceful and civil transfer of power was evidence that harris didn't really believe that trump would bring fascism?

Wellโ€ฆ.you would think theyโ€™d do everything in their power to stop the said fascist dictator they claimed him to be. Being a convicted felon and liable rapist and fraudster that tried to overthrow the government. The courts gave presidents super powers and Biden/Harris just sayโ€ฆ.โ€welp, oh well!โ€ Just doesnโ€™t match their hysteria. They could say at the very least heโ€™s not like ya knowโ€ฆ.an eligible person for the job lol.

So what should she have done? She already said he wasn't fit for the job. Didn't affect enough votes. The vote made it pretty obvious what the voters chose - hatred, violence, bigotry, and misogyny. I don't see any alternative other than possibly doing what trump tried to do in 2020 without any evidence.

It didnโ€™t affect enough votes because she is calling him a fascists and trying to pull from HIS base AND saying sheโ€™d have republicans (fascist supporters) in her cabinet lol. Courting republicans. Thats why they lost! And idk what you mean itโ€™s up to us if trump is a fascist? He tried stealing an entire election lol. And heโ€™s been saying it all along! We already know! And democrats largely slow walked everything they could and dragged their feet and now they gleefully hand it all over to him! So yeah democrats abandoned their base who was calling for a ceasefire and heavy handed change and they chose โ€œnothing will fundamentally changeโ€. Shocker!

I'm not really sure retoric is the reason people doubt Trump's commitment to democracy. I think Jan 6 is enough evidence for most of those people who are worried about it

YES, and in doing so are saying in effect, "now that you are President, all is forgiven" exactly what Trump was hoping to achieve given to him so sweetly.

What they and "some" of their media counterparts have done to some of these people should be criminal. They've truly scared people to the point of mental issues. Depression, anxiety, hopelessness, prescriptions. It's almost like they have a vested interest in the pharmaceutical industry. I feel really bad for those people. And, I won't say who, but I saw another talking head today trying to rope another weight around these people's shoulders because she is going down (professionally) and I guess she wants everyone to go down with her. It's horribly manipulative.

Yes. A lot of it is completely cynical by people who are actually rubbing their hands in glee at another 4 years of the anti-Trump gravy train (see BrooklynDad, JoJoFromJerz et al). A lot of it is performative from mid-level wokies who may sort-of but not really believe Trump is a fascist - but nothing about Trump will actually affect their cushy lives (see: academics, journalists). But underneath that their are a ton of regular people who really believe all this and are now convinced that Trump is warming up the trains to send trans people/immigrants/[insert marginalized group here] to concentration camps and now it's not safe to leave their houses. It's very sad.

Ken, you seem to be blame Democrats and Harris completely for the results. I don't understand why you refused to give the voters credit. They voted for Trump. They want Trump, or they think Trump won't be so bad. You seem to agree with the second part.

Super gross how people shrieked about the end of democracy and candidates and surrogates implied the same. Then everyone just went back to their lives like it was just another day. Libs are toilet people. Will someone please use their brain and figure out how to get more pictures of Hunterโ€™s hog?

Isn't what you mention a problem with much of America? If the stuff keeps arriving at the door from Amazon and gasoline is cheap then why make a fuss about anything? My high school buddies follow this route. The epic slaughter in Gaza is the perfect example - not even registered as a topic considered by voters. The President declaring he is for Israel, a country that has no regard for liberty and justice for all! That is the talk of a traitor. Not a whimper across across the fruited plain. "I'm all right, Jack!" should be the national motto. We think we are in trouble, but we (in a nation of immigrants) aren't even in the same universe of trouble as are the current immigrants, driven by conditions we cannot imagine to find a better life, but that we are about to kick out.

So whatโ€™s the solution to this? What do you propose they say to the American public to avert a civil war? โ€œYeah, sorry we didnโ€™t convince enough of you to avert disaster. Try not to kill too many other Americans when the shit hits the fanโ€? And it will if he gets in.

Iโ€™m not sure I trust any of these numbers. Iโ€™m hearing a lot of anecdotal weirdness from various places. Iโ€™d like to see them checking into the specifics of how this just slid into place for him so quickly and easily on the heels of his fraud claims. At 4:30 he was whining about massive cheating in Philly. Then silence. A few hours later all the swing states start to fall in line and every hotly contested Senate race too? Then heโ€™s declaring victory, with no concerns about the โ€œcheatingโ€, so I guess he was only worried about it if he was losing. It doesnโ€™t track. He always gives away his dumb plans by talking about them in advance and he was braying nonstop about Kamala being able to flip a switch to change peopleโ€™s votes from him to her. Makes me wonder.

I also donโ€™t trust Musk & Putin, who are quite cozy apparently. There is too much riding on this election for both of them. We have had so much telecom and other hacking - the math doesnโ€™t add up. You canโ€™t simultaneously have record numbers of new voter registrations, fewer votes cast, massive gender gaps and party switching by conservatives AND Trump winning the popular vote by 10M or whatever. I smell a rat.

A+ on this, but is it Ken that composed it or not?

Regarding Harris saying "I get it", the other day I watched Bill Clinton in MI address a group of Arab-Americans regarding Israel. He lamented the slaughter in Gaza and said "I get it" then went on to plead with his listeners to understand how terrible Oct 7 was for Israel!!!! Yet another example of someone NOT getting it, believing Oct 7 was the start of history and ignoring the incredible oppression and suffering of the Palestinians for 76 years and counting.

IL Governor Pritzker, yet another Zionist who sees no hypocrisy in being so in the land of liberty and justice for all, at least made the remark (in contrast to Harris) "if you are going to come for my people you are going to have to come through me". That at least shows some backbone.

Finally, isn't what you describe a Democratic Party tradition, to try to be nice? The manner in which GW Bush won over Gore was preposterous, but Gore readily threw in the towel. Who can say what might have happened had Gore become president then, but it could not have been worse than the disaster of Iraq, the designer of which Harris was so happy to have on board.

My favorite part of this excellent column deals with the money she raised, especially as Iโ€™ve heard rumors of a deficit. (She sent out fundraising texts today.) We suffered through an abysmal campaign, but the people who ran it got rich(er) in the process. I will forever believe that she took the hardline on Israel to avoid angering her Jewish mega donors. Yes, Iโ€™m that cynical.

It's almost like we've done this before and Trump already showed he's an authoritarian. Can't wait to see what he'll do with next with his presidential immunity.

Trump and the hate of the Republican party fill me with despair. But the Democrats fill me with contempt and loathing.

People have watched and listened to Trump for years. They either said "Yes, I want that!" or they said "Eh, whatever. I'm not going to vote against that." I just don't see any magic words about the economy or immigration would have changed that.

Sadly, I do agree that we must have a peaceful transfer of power. What I would like is for Biden to have both trump and vance assassinated, but that would start a civil war. So, fantasy aside I am beginning to think that we, the adults in the country, who do believe in democracy need to stop protecting all those people who voted for trump. Will we lose our democracy? I truly hope not. But you can only cry wolf so many times. If trump brings the pain he says he will, we need to step back and say that yes, we wish it wasnโ€™t happening but itโ€™s what the people want. Illegal immigrants whose American spouses and children will lose their family member. I am truly sorry, but thatโ€™s what your neighbors want. And when thereโ€™s nobody working the fields to harvest, or there are Americans picking, at double (maybe even triple) the rate (and still only making minimum wage) and food prices rise, thatโ€™s what they voted for. In the end, what Iโ€™m trying to say is that many of us have protected our youngsters (looking at all the folks born since Reagan). And maybe we have let it go on for too long. Your decisions have consequences. We canโ€™t save you from yourself, but if we are lucky weโ€™ll be there to help pick up the pieces.
